As we head along into July, we are past the shortest day here in the Southern Hemisphere, but we are right in the middle of "flu season".
Aside from the concerns around of recent months, contrary to some of our leaders out there, targeted nutritional supplementation can and does make a difference to how your body may respond to an "attack".
Vitamin D - its really a pre-hormone, not a vitamin.
I have talked about this interesting and particularly helpful Sunshine Nutrient. But with new data and the current virus issue it has become important to share with you one of the simplest ways to help your immune system through winter(this relates to all of us regardless of whether we are North or South of the equator)
I receive many articles and papers from loads of sources, the points below come from a good friend who is a well known MD who lectures around the world on a number of topics - including Vitamin D. These are the things our main stream media seem to be missing time and time again.
In a June 22, 2020, Orthomolecular Medicine News Service press release, Damien Downing, president of the British Society for Ecological Medicine, outlines how we could resolve the COVID-19 pandemic in 30 days for about $2 per person, simply by taking affirmative action to raise vitamin D levels. The downside or risk of doing this is basically nil, while the potential gain could be avoiding another COVID-19 spike altogether. And of course, our health authorities are hell bent on getting a frickin (potentially dangerous) vaccine to market when something safe and effective has always been available!
- Optimizing your vitamin D could reduce your risk of severe COVID-19 by 90% and your risk of dying from it by 96%
- Data from 20 European countries found the probability of developing and dying from COVID-19 is negatively correlated with mean population vitamin D status; both probabilities reach zero at vitamin D levels above 30 ng/mL(75 nmol/L).
This is not just about the current issue, Vitamin D use is backed with epidemiological studies, randomised controlled studies and beyond. Vitamin D is critical for our health. We know that vitamin D is essential for healing and protecting against many contagious diseases and chronic diseases. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with upper and lower respiratory infections, heart disease, asthma, cancers, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, HIV, hypertension, inflammatory bowel disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide public health problem in both developed and developing countries. If you are concerned, and NOT taking a Vitamin D supplement then now is the time to get started. It's far more important and effective as a prophylactic, if you are actually infected(although that's highly unlikely) there are herbs that I would be recommending instead, that once again, we have great recent data on their effectiveness against covid-19 from the "trenches".
Although the required prospective randomised controlled trials using vitamin D have not yet been completed on this specific virus, they are indeed underway and results from many will be in before years end.
As of June 2020, there were over 20 studies in progress on the use of vitamin D in COVID-19,why do you think that is?.....
So let's just do a little recap.
Our bodies contain cell receptors for vitamin D in virtually every system of the body? That tells us that vitamin D is necessary for virtually all body functions. Vitamin D actually influences the expression of over 200 health-supporting genes in our bodies.
When I was first taught about Vitamin D, we were told that although classified as a vitamin, vitamin D is actually a key regulatory hormone for calcium and bone metabolism. It should really be referred to as a "pre hormone". Adequate vitamin D status is essential for ensuring normal calcium absorption and maintenance of healthy plasma calcium levels. If we don't have enough Vitamin D the body can be confused as to where to deposit or use calcium. Besides bone support, vitamin D of course has many other roles in the body.
Good food sources are things such as egg yolks, wild caught salmon and mackerel, organ meats, and some mushrooms. But please avoid any processed foods with added vitamin D(its usually the cheapest form which is of no use and is likely to do nothing positive for your health).
