Our Political leaders use the all the fancy words ..... but what is happening in NZ with regards to sustainability and climate change? If only our leaders could take a leaf out of the book from some of our European friends. With all the talk of our economic slump and the darkness that looms on the horizon it could be sop different.

An increase in organic farming would not only help fill an increasing demand, but also reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals used in agriculture as well as improve of carbon foot print.

The following figures are from American research but it gives you an idea of the significance that it could make to the global environment.

If only 10,000 medium sized farms in the U.S. converted to organic production, they would store so much carbon in the soil that it would be equivalent to taking 1,174,400 cars off the road, or reducing car miles driven by 14.62 billion miles.

Converting the U.S.’s 160 million corn and soybean acres to organic production would sequester enough carbon to satisfy 73 percent of the Kyoto targets for CO2 reduction in the U.S.

U.S. agriculture as currently practised emits a total of 1.5 trillion pounds of CO2 annually into the atmosphere. Converting all U.S. cropland to organic would not only wipe out agriculture's massive emission problem. By eliminating energy-costly chemical fertilisers, it would actually give the US a net increase in soil carbon of 734 billion pounds.

The organic sector is booming again in Switzerland. Turnover of organic products increased by 7.7 % to almost 1.3 billion Swiss Francs in the past year. The organic food sector grew almost double as strong as the total market did. The main increase was reported from French-speaking Switzerland with 9 %.

Turnover of organic vegetables increased by 10.2 %, organic fruit by 8.5 % and organic eggs by 8.2 %. Organic meat grew by 12.6 % and organic dairy products by 5 %. Organic skincare is another significant growth area.

The organic area grew by 2,000 hectares in the country. In 2007, 5,651 organic companies were working according to Bio-Suisse guidelines. There are also 600 companies working according to organic guidelines in Switzerland, but those are not certified by Bio Suisse.

So what are we waiting for - this country could be doing so much more, so lets do our bit and support organic farming wherever we can, because you're worth it.

Organic Aloe Vera

Many companies use water as the base in skin and hair care formulations. This is not the case with Miessence - you will find the base is often certified organic aloe vera juice and of course when we use these products our skin is getting all the benefits - and as you will read below there are many.

What is Aloe Vera?

Aloe Vera is a succulent plant that originated in the arid areas of North Africa and the Middle East. It is one of several hundred Aloe plants that are natives to many of the arid regions of the world, except Australia.  

History:

Aloe Vera has a recorded history in medicine and health care dating as far back as 3,500 years. Legend has it that two of the most alluring Egyptian queens, Nefertiti and Cleopatra, relied on Aloe Vera to maintain their youthful complexions, by drinking and bathing in Aloe Vera, and that Alexander the Great conquered the island of Socroto off the east coast of Africa for the purpose of obtaining sufficient amounts of Aloe as a wound healing agent for his soldiers.

Muslims who have made the pilgrimage to Mecca are entitled to hang an Aloe plant over their doors as a talisman against evil.

Cultivation:

The Aloe Vera used by ONEgrp in the Miessence products is certified Organically Grown which means that chemical fertilisers or pesticides are never used on fields or plants. It also means following a strict regiment of working organic material back into the soil to keep the fields in peak growing condition. Each leaf is harvested by hand and must be nicked and pulled carefully from the mother plant so as not to break the rind. Although not conclusive, studies have been done which indicate Aloe Vera may have some value in the treatment or prevention of some cancers and arthritis.

Other trials have been conducted and preliminary evidence shows Aloe Vera may be useful in treating diabetes, immune system problems and psoriasis.

• speed the healing of skin wounds, burns and other injuries.
• aid constipation, diarrhoea and other intestinal problems.
• speed and improve general healing when taken internally.
• relieve itching and swelling of irritated skin.
• help kill fungus and bacteria.
• improve the effectiveness of sun screen products.

Freshening Mouth Wash.

A mouthwash is not very exciting for many people, but for those of you who use one you may want to consider the following about the common mouthwash formula's that have been marketed on TV for years:

  Health Snippets.

Should we be limiting our exposure to fluoride? If so what can we do? 

More and more of us are becoming informed of the effect of fluoride on our health and with what appears to be a rather biased approach from most councils around the country what should we do. 

I even remember going to a meeting here in Taupo a few years back when the fluoridation of our town supply was being hotly debated. An internationally renowned specialist was here to present up to date research papers to the local council and guess what? In 1997 the Union of Government Scientists of the United States Environmental Protection Agency voted unanimously to co-sponsor a Californian initiative to ban fluoridation, stating "Our members review of the body of evidence over the last 11 years, including animal and human epidemiology studies, indicates a causal link between fluoride/fluoridation and cancer, genetic damage, neurological impairment and bone pathology."
