Newsletter July2016Hi friends,
In this issue:
By maintaining a healthy pH level we can hold many common ailments at bay. It is considered by some as the "Forgotten Key". Perhaps one of the most under-estimated and misunderstood physiological issues of our time. Essentially its all about metabolism, oxygen and minerals. I was speaking with another practitioner today and a comment was made from their observations that even the idea of toxicity and heavy metal burden, something that impacts on the health of many people, arises from an initial mineral deficiency and consequential pH drop. If the mineral status was good in the initial period of heavy metal exposure then the body may well have been able to cope with the toxins and even eliminate them before they were locked up in the tissue somewhere. So why should we care about pH?Our pH relates to the food we eat and our metabolism on the one hand and the ability to buffer or counteract the ions that have been created and ultimately excreted through our lungs and kidneys - the common denominator here is our mineral status, and our intracellular minerals as well as minerals within bone and connective tissue are critical. Research is ongoing and continues to show the many ways our pH has an influence on a wide range of health concerns. The evidence grows and the importance goes deeper and deeper with each and every study. Some areas where we know pH is an important determining factor:
How did our ancestors get on? Clever scientists have been able to make calculations relating to the dietary intake of our pre-agricultural revolution ancestors and todays common diet. From this we have learn't that our forefathers diet consisted of significantly higher levels of potassium along with natural minerals in the forms of citrates and malates mostly due to a greater intake of fruits and vegetables - in fact the diet was 85% alkaline. Compare that to todays relatively low intake of fruits and vegetables (and hence low levels of potassium and the citrates and malates), too much sodium chloride(salt in this form is acidic) and loads of sugars and fats that make up what we term "Energy Dense Nutritionally Poor"(EDNP)foods and the end result is overwhelmingly acid. Researchers use the term "Net Endogenous Acid Production" (NEAP) - simply meaning the internal acid load left after we eat certain foods and our forefathers diet resulted in a score of -82 - which leaves them with a wonderful level of buffering, a level of Zero would be completely neutral. Compare that to our modern diet that sits somewhere between +50 to +100 - simply put, the higher this number is the greater the level of mineral buffers(calcium, magnesium, potassium) required to neutralise the acids, and you can see this leaves no buffer at all and will result in our mineral reserves going down consistently. The end result for you is greater wear and tear on the kidneys and musculoskeletal system(translates to more high blood pressure and arthritis) The problem with a lack of buffering (minerals) is that while this form of acidity is not immediately life threatening it is none the less damaging and if left will slowly erode the kidneys ability to correct the situation and ultimately various body systems become compromised from (and here is another fancy term:) "Chronic Mild Metabolic Acidosis". Combine this with the following FACT: From the age of 25 we loose 1% of kidney function every year and the result will never be good! So unless you are really going to town with multiple serving of alkalising food(loads of vegetables and fruit) you are likely to be one of the many suffering with Chronic Mild Metabolic Acidosis - you have an acidic body. As well as moving us closer to degenerative disease some of the more up to date research on the topic gives more evidence of the importance of pH as it relates to our enzyme activity. Enzyme activity = LIFE There is something close to 75,000 enzymes running around in our body, more than 7,000 processes in the body are totally reliant on enzymes, without which, the basic body processes cannot happen. And guess what? If the pH changes from the optimum level there is a corresponding reduced level of enzyme function - you could view the enzyme as a key and when the pH shifts to being acidic the shape of the key changes and will no longer fit the lock - things won't work. How do I know what my pH is? We find testing urine is the easiest way to check your pH status quickly. You may find that the first urine of the day could be slightly acidic from the removal of body waste during the night/sleep phase for your body - so try taking a sample from the second morning urine to compare. We suggest to begin by taking the sample regularly in the morning at the same time each day to get an idea of changes that may occur from day to day. If your pH is in the ideal range consistently then obviously what you are doing with regards diet and lifestyle do not need to be altered. If the pH is too acidic then of course you have choices - do nothing and know that its only a matter of time before something "breaks", or alter what you eat, look at alkalising foods and superfood blends that could help, and shift your pH to a healthier level. Once this ideal pH is achieved with your morning sample, you could go on and try testing at different times of the day. Ideal for your second morning sample would be 6.8-7.0 If your first sample is tested and is considerably more acidic this is potentially an indicator of internal toxicity and serious mineral deficiency(one of the hallmarks of "chronic mild metabolic acidosis"). After eating (1-2 hours) your pH should go up and may read between 7.0 - 8.5, after eating breakfast for example. Good quality test strips will allow you to check your saliva as well as urine. Some suggest that the urine pH is telling you about the efficiency of the digestive system while the saliva is more of a general "how you have been treating yourself". Just be aware that the pH of your saliva will alter even with a change of bacteria that may be present in your mouth. The all important thing to understand is that alkaline minerals are required to create a safe, effective buffer and many of us simply do not have enough of the correct minerals in our system. By increasing our intake of the appropriate minerals our system will work far more efficiently in many ways. Here is an example of what can happen when pH is addressed effectively: Case History. Female 53 years old with the following symptoms: Spasms through out body, choking sensation in throat, headaches, cramp in fingers, toes, calf muscles, terrible fatigue. Has been dealing with these symptoms for 5 years, suggestions are that she has a heavy metal toxicity which has been confirmed through a hair analysis and for some reason her body cannot eliminate the toxins. She had been taking Magnesium and various other minerals including calcium in different forms, but ongoing assessments indicate the magnesium level just won't improve. Urine pH = 5.0 - 5.5 generally. Unchanged by above nutrient prescriptions. Treatment 1: As the pH was not improving with the simple minerals used in the past, a specific high potency alkalising formula was introduced. A product called Basica Active E at 2 serves twice daily for 5 days - sipped throughout the day in water After 5 days her urine pH had improved and was sitting at - 6. After 10 Days the urine pH was 7.2 - 7.5. And importantly ALL her symptoms were gone. In addition, the Energy increase was amazing. At this time the Basica Active E was reduced to 2 serves daily, sipping throughout the day and this maintained her pH at 7 - 7.5. The next step will be to work specifically to clear the heavy metal burden(another newsletter topic perhaps?) This is perhaps a classic case of Latent Acidity(Chronic Mild Metabolic Acidosis)that had created mineral depletion. Poor mineral status initially may have allowed the Heavy metals into the body and these were possibly blocking the uptake of minerals and this in turn disrupted normal metabolic function. Beneficial minerals are critical for healthy metabolic function and optimum tissue pH is critical to balance enzymatic activity. To summarise: Chronic latent tissue acidity [Chronic Mild Metabolic Acidosis] will promote the rapid excretion of minerals, degrade enzyme activity and therefore negatively affect cellular metabolism = poor health. And here is another short case that shows again how important this all is: Female aged 88years with a Diagnosis of Parkinson Disease 5 years ago. No medication. Her Symptoms: Fatigue, mobility issues, tremor, headache, insomnia. She currently uses some supplementation including CoQ10, various antioxidants and Magnesium. First off we introduced the Basica Active E at 2 serves 2 x sipped throughout the day. And the Result: On Day 2 she noticed an IMMEDIATE energy increase and had a full nights sleep (the first in 2 years!). Headache gone. After a week the Energy and sleep improvements are being sustained. The lady herself couldn't get over how more energetic she felt, it initiated a new lease on life and she wanted a whole truck load full of the Basica Active E! Its interesting to also note that the CoQ10 she was taking probably wasn't doing much due to compromised enzyme activity resulting from the acidity. Here are a number of our key products that will aid the body with mineral replacement and alkalising: Miessence Deep Green Super Food Concentrated Mineral Drops(CMD) PRL Greens Mix Active Elements 3.1 (or 3.2 or 4.1) Basica Activ E Basica Vital E Naturopaths Own Green Juice Factors Take a moment to have a look and see if any of these resonate with you. If you have any questions relating to YOUR situation and pH please ask. What is the therapy that was removed from Medical/Nursing text books in the 1970's? This therapy is highly beneficial and even life saving and yet it fell out of favour for some reason when we started to get all too sophisticated and the idea became a little uncomfortable to speak about. If you guessed coffee enema's then you get the prize. Here are some of the points summarised from a good article from the Truth about Cancer team.
We have Enema kits available from our shop here Product Highlights from www.maximumwellbeing.com Two products to have on hand when considering pH are a tool to measure and a guide to teach you which foods to have more of and which are the ones to avoid.
These are our very own, practitioner quality pH test strips and the 80/20 Acid alkaline chart As an example, to combat the acid load produced from eating a 200gram steak you would need to eat approximately 12 cups of vegetables. For most people, the chronic mild metabolic acidosis is likely to be silent and product no specific symptoms for years - even decades, but be aware that any of the following could be your first sign that things are needing alkalising:
